Bronte’s Blog – The story behind every Commando

oldccamper-3Five years after Cameron Canvas was founded in 1978, we saw the potential of having a tent on top of a trailer. Choices in those days were limited to a swag, a tent or a caravan and we believed there was an untapped market for those who sought a better but inexpensive way to go camping. Cameron Canvas was one of the first companies in Australia to develop and market the humble camper trailer and the first camper to roll off the production line was called a Cameron Convertor.

Our faith in the humble camper trailer paid off and its demand grew. Over the years, there has been many models released, the Standard Off Road, Standard On Road, Jumbo, Super, Ultimate Hard Floor, U Beaut, Gen1, Unlimited to name a few. We went on to develop an innovative patented product called the Concept tent top, designed out of a need to make the tent easier and quicker to set up and to be more accessible to the mobility impaired. The Concept tent top was massively popular; people were amazed by how easy it was. We went on to further improve the integrated poles technology and it has evolved into what we now know today as the best-selling Easy tent top.

Cameron Campers is recognized in Australia for innovation, unbeaten quality and durability. Many of our campers built over 30 years ago are still being used on the roads today! Look for the Cameron Campers & Canvas badge as you walk through a caravan park and you will be sure to find a Cameron.

The new Commando is backed up with 39 years of manufacturing knowledge to create a happy and trouble-free camping experience so you will feel relaxed and refreshed. Why sacrifice your precious time messing around with pegs, poles and ropes? Why make your holiday miserable with a leaky tent or to arrive back at camp to discover your tent blown away?  Why put the safety of your family at risk with an inferior, untested and untried camper trailer? Why miss on a favourite destination because you are unsure of your trailer’s capabilities? Aren’t you and your family more important than that? We guarantee that you can rest assured with the very best, a Cameron.

We believe camping is all about having fun and that it should be effortless.

We also believe that everyone should have a camper that is made to go where you want to go.

Bronte’s Blog: The story behind every Conquest

Inspired by an adventure to Cape York towing a camper trailer, I realised that there had to be a better way to go camping. Traveling over long distances (over 8,000kms) highlighted the need to reduce issues of wind drag and fuel consumption. Being on the road for long periods of time required the necessity of having more storage space, of a bigger kitchen with a large accessible fridge and the desire for more comfort away from home. Because we were on the move every day, I wanted a camper that was even quicker to set up and pack up (if that was possible!), after going through endless muddy creek crossings, I wanted a camper that was easier to clean with external accessories (i.e. gas bottles) not exposed to the elements.

The escape to Cape York put forth ideas which I desired to be made into reality. I wanted a new camper that would be aerodynamic and lighter to tow without compromising on strength. To be luxurious with all the comforts from home. To have huge storage spaces with a concealed and stylish body to be proud off. To have a bigger kitchen that would make cooking a wonderful experience. A fridge capable of storing much more than a few meals and more importantly, to keep plenty of drinks nice and cold! I imagined designing the perfect camper that would make travelling a pleasure and camping a delight.

The team comprised years of experience with a vast array of skills. We spent more than four years investigating the latest technologies and discovered the benefits of high quality marine grade aluminium and rivet & adhesive constuction.blog conquest4

Prototypes were tried and tested and, if did not meet our high quality standards, was rejected. We wanted a streamlined profile but the angular panels were a nightmare. We persisted again and again until we got it perfect. We would not compromise on quality, standards had to be adhered to and deadlines made flexible to ensure we got it right.blog conquest

The new baby was named the CONQUEST, because we have overcome many obstacles to craft a sensational product and has the proven capability to conquer all types of terrain the way it was designed to be.

Over the years, customers and friends from all over Australia have inspired us their feedback, contributions and for supporting us on this arduous journey. A big thank you to you all (you know who you are).

I am excited to accomplish my ambition of producing the best camper. It is everything I wanted and more.

After 38 years, we finally made it.

Bronte’s Blog. The story behind every Companion

Every idea starts with a problem. Customers approached us because they were unable to find a slide on camper that had plenty of storage space, that was easy to set up, had a low bed and allowed you to sleep without having to climb over your partner.

I saw an opportunity to solve the problem by creating a new slide on camper, made to what customers really wanted and not what others thought they should have.

slideonWe started a new flagship model to create an alternative slide on in the market. We spent three years researching and developing slide on prototypes that were road tested to understand what worked and what didn’t work. The earlier difficulties encountered were correcting the slide on weight and making it fit to any type of utility tray. Other challenges were the thick canvas being use, which would make folding of the tent difficult.  All issues had to be resolved before the new model could be released.

We were delighted with the results and the conception of the Cameron Slide On was born. We named the slide on the ‘Companion’ because the Cameron Companion travelled with you wherever you went, like a shadow! Many people were pleasantly surprised at how much storage there was and liken it to the “Swiss army knife of campers as it had everything you need”. You can take as much stuff or more stuff than some people towing trailers with the economy and convenience of a single vehicle.

We believe camping is all about having fun and that it should be effortless.

We also believe that everyone should have a camper that is what you want it to be.

White chocolate & passionfruit mousse

Ingredients

  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 1/2 cup passionfruit pulp
  • 150g white chocolate
  • 300ml thickened cream
  • 3 egg whites
  • 6 medium Easter eggs

Method

  1. Beat well 3 egg yolks and 1/4 cup caster sugar until pale and creamy. Fold in 1/2 cup passionfruit pulp alternately with 150g white chocolate, melted, and cooled slightly. If the chocolate is too hot, the mixture will seize.
  2. Beat 300ml thickened cream until soft peaks form, and in a separate bowl beat 3 egg whites until firm peaks form. Fold into the passionfruit mixture.
  3. Break tops from 6 medium Easter eggs and sit eggs in serving glasses. Fill with mousse and refrigerate for 3-4 hrs or overnight until set. Serve with chocolate shards for dipping.
